IPL 2026: Rishabh Pant points to fielding lapses after defeat against Chennai Super Kings

In Sunday’s Indian Premier League match in Chennai, the Lucknow Super Giants lost by five wickets to the Chennai Super Kings despite having enough runs scored, according to captain Rishabh Pant.

Before the CSK bowlers came together to stop LSG at 203/8, Josh Inglis scored an incredible 85 runs. After that, CSK overhauled the target in 19.2 overs thanks to a bold knock from Urvil Patel (65 off 23 balls).

As a result, LSG’s chances of making the playoffs were ended with their eighth defeat in 11 games.

“It was a great game. Everything was coming up nicely. We knew we would be put under pressure in the Powerplay. When you come to Chennai, that is the kind of cricket you expect. Felt there was enough on the board. Fielding standards have to be up there, too many dropped catches. Urvil played a fantastic and unbelievable knock, like Inglis did for us. The team showed character to come back,” PTI quoted Pant as saying during the post-match presentation.

Inglis launched a vicious attack on the CSK bowlers during the powerplay, bringing LSG to 77 for no loss after five overs before managing 203 and Pant acknowledged that LSG did not reach their desired total.

“The way we started, we would have liked to have more. We knew 200-210 would be a good target. They got off to a flier but we knew it was getting difficult after the powerplay,” he said.

Pant stated that the squad supported experience by refusing to give Shahbaz Ahmed the final over.

“That came to mind, but it was a tough call to have. We needed to back someone. Aiden Markram has done it a lot of times. That is why we believe in every individual.”

Shivam Dube hit Markram for two sixes while he was defending ten off six balls.

Urvil Patel, the player of the match, stated that the coaches had advised him to keep things straightforward.

“The coaches told me to hold my shape and hit the ball well. Rutu (Ruturaj Gaikwad) just told me that the wicket is a little low and to be ready for it. He did not say a lot, and just asked me to play the way I did,” he said.
