World Cup-winning former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has distanced himself from Yograj Singh’s heated outbursts against Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Kapil Dev, saying that his father’s controversial comments were “not okay” and that he “sincerely apologises” for them.
In addition to claiming to have mistreated Kapil on selection issues in the past, Yuvraj discussed the controversial topic of his father accusing Dhoni of being the reason behind his ouster from the national team in a podcast interview with “Sports Tak.”
“I would like to apologise to Kapil and MS Dhoni about the comments because Kapil paaji has been a great player for India. What kind of relationship they (Yograj and Kapil) had, I don’t know, I wasn’t even born,” Yuvraj said.
“And I have played with MS Dhoni and had expectations about my relationship with him. But what dad said about him, I have told him that it’s not okay.
“I told him ‘it’s not okay because things reflect on me. I have played with him, I would appreciate you not saying these things about him’,” the big-hitting all-rounder, who was the star of India’s 2011 World Cup title triumph, stated.
According to Yuvraj, Kapil and Dhoni are both fully aware that his father’s remarks do not represent his own opinions.
“Whatever the reasons, you know what they are. But I would sincerely like to apologise to both of them for the words but they also know that the words are not mine. As cricketers, I have huge respect for them for what they have done for the country,” he said.
When Yograj claimed to have dropped Kapil “for no reason” while he was captain of the North Zone and Haryana, he abused Kapil at home before quitting cricket entirely.
Regarding Dhoni, Yograj has insisted that Yuvraj’s ouster from the squad was due to the legendary captain. Yuvraj battled cancer to return to cricket after winning the World Cup in 2011, but he retired in 2019 after not being selected for the 2019 ODI World Cup.
Yograj declared that he would never forgive Dhoni for “ruining” Yuvraj’s career.
