The Delhi Capitals defeated the Mumbai Indians by 7 wickets in the Women’s Premier League on Tuesday in Vadodara thanks to a gutsy fifty from Jemimah Rodrigues, who led from the front.
The Mumbai Indians struggled in the Powerplay after being put in to bat on a slow surface, but Nat Sciver-Brunt produced another brilliant performance (66 not out off 45) to lead her team to 154-5.
Lizelle Lee (46 off 28) and Shafali Verma (29 off 24) gave the Delhi Capitals a fairly solid start, but they lost direction in the middle over before Jemimah (51 not out off 37) soothed the dressing room by finishing the chase in 19 overs.
Veteran Marizanne Kapp (10 not out off 6) finished the game with a six and gave Jemimah the support she needed at the other end.
The Mumbai Indians lost their fourth game in six, while the Delhi Capitals won their second match in five.
Shafali’s stumps were rattled after she failed to connect a flatter one down the leg side from left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma during the Powerplay.
After being declared stumped off Amanjot Kaur in the eleventh over, South African Lee—who has been in scorching form so far—was disappointed. After Lee lost her balance on another one down the leg side, the umpire took some time to make the call.
The Mumbai Indians haven’t been able to get going in the first six overs even after Hayley Mathews returned from injury. On Tuesday, the West Indian and her opening partner Sajeevan Sajana both saw their stumps disturbed and fell cheaply.
In addition to dismissing Matthews, Delhi Capitals’ Marizanne Kapp was as accurate as ever, giving up only eight runs in four overs. Once more, it was up to captain Harmanpreet Kaur (41 off 33) and veteran Sciver-Brunt to lead the squad to a competitive score.
With two sixes and six fours in a fluid knock of 66 not out off 45 balls, Sciver-Brunt stayed undefeated. Aside from the Sciver-Brunt display, the batting performance was once again subpar.
