Why 2026 is set to shape up as a landmark year for Indian sports

With global titles up for grabs across disciplines and a new Olympic qualification cycle that promises some early tickets to the 2028 Los Angeles Games, Indian sports in 2026 would be both exciting and tough.

Check out the highlights of a choc-a-bloc calendar that will keep spectators enthralled from the first to the last month as India’s sports heroes, both young and old, get ready for battle.

January-February-March

Since the nation’s favorite sport has three World Cups this year, the first quarter will be devoted to cricket.

Breakout teenage players like Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre will be widely watched at the 50-over Under-19 World Cup, which will take place in Zimbabwe and Namibia from January 15 to February 6.

The senior men will start their defense of the T20 world title in a home World Cup that will also feature some games in Sri Lanka, one day after the final of this age-group event that has produced stars of Virat Kohli’s caliber. The dates of the senior event are February 7–March 8.

The Australian Open of tennis is scheduled to take place from January 12 to February 1 as usual, but there won’t be much excitement surrounding the Indian challenge.

However, a fit-again P V Sindhu and the other Indian players will be closely watched starting on March 3 as they attempt to rebuild following a relatively poor season at the All England Championships of badminton.

When the AFC Women’s Asian Cup begins on March 1 in Australia, Indian football fans will have something to look forward to as well because their side has finally qualified.

April-May-June

The Asian Championships of boxing in Mongolia and the Candidates Tournament of chess in Cyprus, which will choose the challenger for the World Championship title presently held by India’s D Gukesh, are two significant events that will begin in late March and continue until April.

Both events will begin on March 28. The boxing event will conclude on April 11, while the major chess tournament, which will include R Praggnanandhaa from India in the Open section and R Vaishali, Koneru Humpy, and Divya Deshmukh in the women’s event, will continue until April 16.

From April 1 to 10, Ahmedabad will host the Asian Championships for weightlifting. The badminton Thomas and Uber Cup, which takes place from April 24 to May 3, is scheduled next.

The Indian men’s and women’s teams have qualified for the ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals in London, which will begin on April 28 and conclude on May 10.

The women’s T20 global Cup in June will bring attention back to Harmanpreet Kaur and her teammates as they aim to add the top prize in the shortest format to the ODI global title they won in 2025.

With the Diamond League in May, the athletic season would also begin. As javelin superstar Neeraj Chopra prepares for the Asian and Commonwealth Games, he is expected to shine in these competitions.

Fans will be captivated by the FIFA World Cup of football, which will be jointly held by the USA, Mexico, and Canada in June and July, as well as the French Open (May) and Wimbledon (June) of tennis.

July-August-September

Weightlifting, boxing, and athletics would be the main attractions of a drastically reduced Commonwealth Games, which would take place from July 23 to August 2. This comes after shooting and wrestling, two of India’s top medal-winning sports, were removed off the list in order to maintain a strict budget.

The World Championship of badminton will take place in Delhi on August 17, just after the Games, as India continues to strive to become a top venue for major events.

The men’s and women’s hockey World Cup will start in Belgium and the Netherlands on August 14, a few days prior to this. The women will have to compete for a spot during the qualifiers in March, while the Indian men are guaranteed one after winning the Asia Cup.

On August 22, a silver-level World Athletics Continental Tour event will begin in Bhubaneswar at the same time. This would be a historic event on India’s calendar.

The Asian Games, which will take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, are one of the biggest events in September and are where some early Olympic berths will be reserved.

Two years later, the hockey gold winners will be eligible for the LA Games, and quota spots in shooting will also be available.

The Diamond League Finals (Athletics) in Brussels on September 4 and 5 would come before this.

The 46th edition of the Chess Olympiad, in which India won gold in both the men’s and women’s divisions in 2025, will take place in Tashkent in September, though the precise dates have not yet been set.

October-November-December

The prestigious World Championships of wrestling will take place in Bahrain starting on October 24 in the final quarter of the year. Soon after, from October 27 to November 8, China will host the World Championships in Weightlifting.

Shooters will compete for Olympic quota spots in the ISSF World Championship (rifle, pistol, and shotgun) in Doha, Qatar, starting on November 1.

The World Chess Championships, whose precise date and venue have not yet been decided, will take center stage in December.
