Following the team’s recent 0-2 home Test series loss to South Africa, former India captain Kapil Dev avoided endorsing the concept of separate coaches on Wednesday, stating that the BCCI should use whichever coaching structure best suits Indian cricket.
When asked if having different coaches for the red-ball and white-ball formats could help put an end to India’s recent run of home Test defeats, Kapil responded: “I don’t know… I can’t answer that. You have to really work something like that in your mind and say what should happen. Whatever is good for cricket, I think they should do it.”
The captain of the 1983 World Cup-winning squad, Kapil, denied that being an athlete in the social media age is more difficult than it was when he was competing.
“No, it’s always the same. It was difficult then, it is difficult now. It was easy then and it is easy now. Your mindset is more important,” he said.
Regarding if national representation has been overshadowed by the increasing financial appeal of T20 leagues, Kapil stated that each player has an own set of interests.
“Everybody loves money, but some players feel that is very important. I still feel playing for India is more important than playing IPL. But everybody is individual, they have their own thought process. Good luck to them.”
When asked if he had a favorite format, Kapil replied that he just likes the game in all of its forms.
“I just love cricket. Doesn’t matter even two balls cricket or 100 balls or 100 overs or 10 overs… cricket is cricket. See golf is golf, whatever format you play, end of the day you enjoy golf.”
When questioned about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s performances, he also made a humorous comment.
“Good luck, they should play golf also,” Kapil, the current president of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), joked.
