Virat Kohli fastest to 28,000 international runs, rewrites record books

India batting stalwart Virat Kohli became the second most prolific scorer after Sachin Tendulkar and the fastest player to amass 28,000 runs across forms in international cricket during the first ODI against New Zealand in Vadodara on Sunday.

By striking a four off New Zealand leg-spinner Adithya Ashok in his 624th innings, Kohli reached the milestone. Only the third member of the 28000-run club, Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara, achieved the milestone in his 666th innings, while Tendulkar did so in his 644th.

Prior to the game, the 37-year-old Kohli had 27,975 runs in all international cricket formats. Sangakkara scored 28,016 runs from 666 innings, whereas Tendulkar scored 34,357 from 782 innings.

In February 2023, Kohli became the fastest batter to amass 25,000 runs, surpassing Tendulkar by 28 innings in 549 innings.

In October 2023, Kohli became the fastest player to reach the milestone of 26,000 runs. In September 2024, a year later, he scored 27,000 runs in his 594th inning.
