Shreyas Iyer will reportedly not play in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand after sustaining a severe spleen laceration while trying to make a diving catch during an October India-Australia ODI.
January 11 marks the commencement of the series. The BCCI has not granted him permission. Although he can bat, he lacks the strength to play. Iyer has swiftly lost weight (around 6 kg) as a result of the accident due to a decrease in muscular mass, according to a report in TOI.
Shreyas was expected to play two Vijay Hazare Trophy matches for Mumbai on January 3 and 6 before joining the Indian side in Vadodara ahead of the three-match ODI series against the Kiwis, according to media reports earlier this week.
However, a BCCI source reportedly said that Shreyas’s ability to handle the physical demands of a 50-over match after abdominal surgery will determine whether or not he plays in the three-match ODI series and the Vijay Hazare Trophy games.
“Shreyas Iyer has started skill training this week. He is in good shape. But we will have to assess his ability to field in a 50-over game before putting him back on the park. Depending on how he pulls up, his participation in the Vijay Hazare will be decided,” a NDTV report quoted the BCCI source as saying.
While trying to take a diving catch off Australian wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey, Shreyas sustained a severe cut to his spleen. Internal bleeding was discovered by subsequent scans at a Sydney hospital, necessitating immediate hospitalization and critical care.
Before his condition improved and he took a plane back home, he underwent a minor surgical procedure to stop the bleeding and was closely watched by local medical specialists in Australia and India, including the Indian team doctor.
