Tilak Varma to miss New Zealand T20 series after groin surgery, doubtful for T20 World Cup

In addition to being seriously doubtful for the first two games of next month’s T20 World Cup, Indian batter Tilak Varma will miss the forthcoming T20 International series against New Zealand after undergoing surgery for a groin injury that caused excruciating discomfort.

The 23-year-old, who is playing for Hyderabad in the present Vijay Hazare Trophy One-day Championship in Rajkot, was taken to a hospital after complaining of severe pain. The five-match Twenty20 series against New Zealand begins on January 21 in Nagpur.

“Tilak Varma reported acute Testicular Pain in Rajkot where he is part of the Hyderabad team for the Vijay Hazare tournament. He was taken to Gokul Hospital and on scan was diagnosed with Testicular Torsion (sudden, intense pain) and was advised immediate surgery,” a PTI report quoted a BCCI official as saying.

“We got an opinion from our specialists who agreed with the same. Tilak underwent successful surgery and is doing well now. We will update you as soon as we have more information on his recovery and expected time-frame for his return to play post discussion with the medical panel,” he added.

Varma will undoubtedly miss the series against New Zealand, according to reliable sources.

On February 7, India will play their first match against the USA in Mumbai in the T20 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The next match between the co-hosts and Namibia will take place in Delhi on February 12.
