T20 World Cup: Why ICC is funding USA cricketers ahead of marquee event

Despite the country’s governing body experiencing a financial and governance crisis, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has promised to support the players on the US national team so they can continue training for the Twenty20 World Cup next year.

The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has not recognized USA Cricket (USAC), and the ICC suspended USAC in September due to activities that damaged the sport’s brand both domestically and internationally, as well as a failure to establish a functional governance structure.

However, the U.S. national teams were allowed to continue preparing for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and to participate in ICC competitions.

On Monday, the ICC declared that it was prepared to fulfill USAC’s commitment to pay its contracted players and finance its performance program while it was suspended.

“(The ICC) will not allow the dysfunction of USAC to compromise USA’s participation and competitiveness at global events, or the work of the ICC in cricket’s return to the Olympics,” the ICC said in a statement.

The ICC’s offer to provide cash through a loan that necessitated the payment of player and staff salaries was previously turned down by USAC, which has filed for bankruptcy.

The United States will compete in the men’s T20 World Cup in February next year.
