T20 World Cup: No panic over Abhishek Sharma’s twin ducks, assures Team India coach

The team coach stated on Tuesday that India opener Ashishek Sharma has “a clear plan and clear mindset” and shouldn’t feel pressured by the fact that he hasn’t scored a run at the T20 World Cup yet.

India, the reigning champions, have won three straight games in Group A. With their spot in the Super Eights virtually guaranteed, they play the Netherlands in Ahmedabad on Wednesday in their last group encounter. However, there has been criticism about left-hander Abhishek’s form, who is often explosive.

“We don’t unnecessary over-analyse. Because sometimes you start to make your own assumptions what the opposition are doing. He has his plans sorted and follows the way he wants to play. Obviously we discuss about the oppositions and their bowling strengths. It is all normal for every batter,” India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak told reporters.

Due to a stomach infection, the 25-year-old was unable to play in the second game against Namibia. Apart from that, he only faced five balls during the tournament after recording two ducks: out on the first ball against the USA and out on the fourth ball against Pakistan.

“He has made runs before he was unwell. The T20 format is a high-risk game and players will get out at some point. If we start stressing on such things then there will be pressure on players. He is in good form, he has got a clear plan and clear mindset,” said Kotak.

Ahead of India’s match against the Netherlands, Kotak declared that there were no dead rubbers, which will no longer affect the event.

“Every game is important for momentum. We played the last game with the same intent and will play the next game with the same intent,” Kotak said.
