In Thursday’s high-stakes knockout match at the Wankhede Stadium, India, who haven’t exactly cruised into the T20 World Cup semi-finals, must now contend with a formidable spin threat from a dangerous England team as both teams strive for perfection.
Despite being overwhelming favorites at the beginning of the competition, India has struggled to put together a flawless game against more formidable opponents.
They have, however, done themselves a favor by taking a flexible stance following their Super 8 opener’s crushing defeat by South Africa. In order to disrupt the predictability of a left-handed top-three on the powerplay, Sanju Samson was reintroduced into the lineup, and this strategy has shown to be quite successful.
With a career-defining 97 not out in a virtual quarterfinal against the West Indies, Samson finally performed on the big stage more than ten years after making his India debut. After that extra effort, the 31-year-old’s confidence will soar, and India is hoping that his opening partner Abhishek Sharma would feel the same way.
Samson had to be removed from the starting lineup following a poor performance against New Zealand in the last bilateral series, while Abhishek was in the best form of his life before this World Cup. Now that the roles have reversed, Abhishek desperately needs an innings that will rebuild his confidence. Although the southpaw scored a fifty against Zimbabwe in the Super Eights, his ballistic prowess is still far from optimal.
For the two openers, England will have their strategies set. Samson, who has previously battled against the England tearaway, will be put to the test by a barrage of short balls into the body from Jofra Archer, while Will Jacks’ off-spin in the powerplay may cause problems for Sharma.
Liam Dawson, a left-arm spinner, has also bowled in the opening six overs. In the middle overs, the hosts must perform at their peak against a cunning Adil Rashid. During a three-hour practice session on Tuesday, the openers and the other Indian hitters did have all those challenges in mind.
After an incredible start to the competition, Ishan Kishan has gone off the boil and would be banking himself to fire at his former IPL home field.
In the main net session prior to the semifinal, skipper Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya, three current Mumbai Indians stars on the national squad, batted for over two hours. Tilak has impressed everyone with his ball hitting in the middle order after being moved down the order to aid the team’s cause. Earlier in the competition, he did not have the same fluency at number three.
The spin tandem of Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel will have no margin for error on a pitch with short boundaries. After being a little expensive against South Africa and the West Indies, the mystery spinner needs to find his lengths regularly.
As usual, Jasprit Bumrah has been outstanding, but the bowlers need to do a little better in the final five overs. Shivam Dube is proving to be a dangerous sixth bowling option, so it will be intriguing to see how Surya makes use of his resources. Although it is always tempting to play Kuldeep Yadav, India is unlikely to change their starting lineup.
Shadley van Schalkwyk’s medium speed on a two-paced surface caused problems for India when they played their tournament opener in Mumbai a month ago.
Italy cantered to a 10-wicket victory against Nepal after bowling the opposition out for 123, and the West Indies defended 196 against England on the semifinal pitch.
For the third consecutive T20 World Cup semifinal, India and England will face off against each other. Before India exacted retribution in Guyana in 2024, England had crushed them en route to the trophy in 2022.
In the latest edition, England has relied on Jacks and Harry Brook’s exceptional genius to save them from difficult circumstances. Sam Curran, an all-rounder, has also performed admirably. Prior to the match, Jos Buttler was the center of attention due to his poor form. It is unclear whether the legendary England white-ball player can find his rhythm again in a crucial match.
