T20 World Cup: Abhishek Sharma doubtful for India-Pakistan clash

India swashbuckling opener Abhishek Sharma may have been discharged from the hospital, but there are still questions about his participation in the crucial T20 World Cup group league match against Pakistan on February 15 in Colombo.

Abhishek, who is recovering from a stomach infection, had to spend a few days in the hospital after he complained of stomach pain and a high fever.

After being discharged from a hospital in Delhi on Wednesday, Abhishek did not practice on Thursday while the Indian squad went through the motions at the Kotla because he was still feeling a little weak.

There has also been considerable weight loss, and it takes time to recover from a serious stomach infection and regain the stamina and strength necessary to play top-flight cricket.

“Abhishek isn’t fine still, might take one or two games,” captain Suryakumar Yadav gave enough clues that it’s possible he won’t start for the Pakistan clash.

It is believed that his training session in Colombo prior to the Pakistan match will serve as a gauge of his development. He may be deemed ready if he bats for an extended period of time, as he typically does at regular nets.

If one has followed the India net sessions over the past year, Abhishek has taken multiple turns batting for anything from 75 to 90 minutes in a three-hour session.

After India’s victory against Namibia, an update on Abhishek’s fitness was given by India spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who stated that he seemed fit enough to play against Pakistan.

“As far as I have spoken to him, he looks good. He did some practice today also. He told me he is on the way,” PTI quoted Chakravarthy, who starred with the ball in the win over Namibia in New Delhi, as saying.

In the absence of Abhishek, Sanju Samson opened alongside Ishan Kishan and smashed 3 sixes and a four in his 8-ball 22.
