Suryakumar Yadav joins Rohit Sharma in elite T20I club with explosive knock in Canberra

India captain Suryakumar Yadav joined Rohit Sharma on an exclusive list during the first T20I against Australia at the Manuka Oval in Canberra on Wednesday.

During his time at the crease, Suryakumar scored a quick-fire 39* (24), slamming three fours and two sixes, looking his ominous best.

Suryakumar became the second Indian and sixth player overall to reach 150 sixes in Twenty20 Internationals with his second six of the innings. He became a member of the elite group alongside Rohit Sharma, Jos Buttler, Muhammad Waseem, and Martin Guptill. He currently has 150 sixes from 86 innings, 2709 runs at an average of 37.62, four hundreds, and 21 fifties under his belt.

Before rain stopped the action, the India captain and Shubman Gill were involved in an undefeated 62* off 35 balls for the second wicket. Suryakumar was in bad form going into the innings. With just two fifties, he has amassed 330 runs at an average of 18.33 since taking over as the T20I captain full-time in July 2024.

Meanwhile, the first T20I between India and Australia was washed out due to rain. India openers, Abhishek Sharma (19 off 14) and Shubman Gill, scored 35 runs for the first wicket off 17 balls after Australia captain Mitchell Marsh asked India to bat first.

Nathan Ellis broke their stand by getting Abhishek holed out at mid-off and captain Suryakumar Yadav joined Gill at the crease, and the two took their time before unleashing their strokes, but rain ended the match just as they started got going.

The second Twenty20 International (T20I) of the series will take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on October 31.
