Sports Ministry urges BCCI to conduct elections under new act

The Sports Ministry wants the highly anticipated BCCI elections in September to be held in accordance with the National Sports Governance Act, but if the new legislation’s regulations are not announced by then, the cricket organization may hold them in accordance with the recommendations of the Lodha Committee, which was approved by the Supreme Court, a sports ministry source stated on Thursday.

Although it hopes to have the comprehensive rules and regulations for its implementation announced much sooner, the ministry plans to fully implement the bill within the next six months.

“Ideally the elections should be held as per the act but in case the rules are not notified in time, they may go ahead as per Lodha Committee recommendations,” the source said.
“Once the rules are notified, all NSFs, including the BCCI, will have to hold elections as per its norms,” the source said.

The new rule permits those between the ages of 70 and 75 to run for office if their international governing body’s bylaws and statutes permit it, even though the Lodha Committee’s recommendations set the age limit at 70. The ICC’s rules for office-bearers do not have an age limit.

Roger Binny, the president of the BCCI, has reached the age of 70, hence his term is up. But as of now, the Board has not named a temporary president.

The elections are scheduled for the last week of September, coinciding with the Board’s Annual General Meeting.
