Six-week layoff looms for Sai Sudharsan after rib fracture

After suffering a rib fracture during a recent Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh, young Indian batter Sai Sudharsan may be sidelined for more than a month, according to a BCCI source on Friday.

During Tamil Nadu’s VHT match against Madhya Pradesh in Ahmedabad, Sudharsan, who is not a member of India’s white ball setup, broke the “anterior cortex of seventh right rib” while making a diving run.

Although it is improbable that the 24-year-old would be able to play in Tamil Nadu’s final Ranji Trophy games, it is still more likely that he will be available for Gujarat Titans in the IPL.

Sources claim that on December 29, Sudharsan reported to the Center of Excellence in Bengaluru, where a scan result revealed “a slender, undisplaced fracture of the anterior cortex of the right seventh rib.”

He was struck in the same region during a net session earlier in the tournament, which is where he suffered the fracture.

According to a COE report, “Sai is undertaking lower-body strength and conditioning work with appropriate protection to the injured rib to facilitate healing, and he has responded well to the program.

“Upper-body training will be introduced once acute symptoms settle over the next 7-10 days, following which he will be gradually progressed into a structured upper-body strength and conditioning program,” the report stated.

This kind of injury is known to typically take six to eight weeks to heal.

After failing to come good in 9 of his 11 innings, Sudharsan has had a challenging run in Test cricket.
