Shubman Gill returns: Set to play T20I series against South Africa

After recovering from a neck ailment that prevented him from participating in the current ODI series, Shubman Gill is expected to return as vice-captain in the next five-match T20 International series against South Africa, according to a BCCI source on Wednesday.

Gill, who is India’s Test and ODI skipper, sustained the injury during the opening Test against the Proteas in Kolkata and was later ruled out of the second Test in Guwahati and the ODI series that followed.

“Gill has recovered fully and will be back as vice-captain,” a PTI report quoted a BCCI source as saying.

The squad for the T20I series, which begins on December 9 in Cuttack, will be announced later in the day. Suryakumar Yadav remains India’s regular captain in the format.

The source also refuted rumors that senior players Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and head coach Gautam Gambhir would meet with Board authorities to discuss the growing rumors of tensions between them in the dressing room.

“No meeting will take place mid-series. We will see what’s to be done once the series is over,” he added.

India were defeated 0-2 in the Test series.
