Shubman Gill released from India squad ahead of 2nd Test against South Africa

India captain Shubman Gill was on Friday released from the Test squad ahead of the second match against South Africa, beginning Saturday in Guwahati.

Gill was hospitalized with a whiplash after experiencing a neck spasm during the first innings of the first Test in Kolkata.

“Gill has been released from the squad. He will be working on his recovery,” a PTI report quoted a senior BCCI source as saying on the condition of anonymity.

Gill’s nape ache persisted even after he traveled to Guwahati with the squad. Whether he can participate in the next ODI series is still up in the air.

“We don’t want recurrence of spasm during the game,” batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had said on Thursday.

Following their thrilling victory at Eden Gardens, South Africa now lead the two-match series 1-0.
