Due to his injury, India’s vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is probably going to miss the forthcoming ODI series against South Africa, which begins later this month.
Iyer got injured while trying to make a catch during the third ODI against Australia on October 25, 2025, and was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital.
After landing awkwardly on his left side while taking an incredible catch to remove Alex Carey, Iyer suffered a catastrophic lesion to his spleen. He was taken to a Sydney hospital’s ICU for a few days before being released last week due to a traumatic injury to his abdomen that caused internal bleeding and a spleen laceration.
Iyer’s condition has been communicated to the selecting committee. He will need more than a month to return to full match fitness, as per the medical reports, according to The Indian Express.
”He will take more time to be fully match fit and the board and selection committee doesn’t want to rush after his injury. He is doubtful for the South Africa ODI series,” the report quoted a BCCI source as saying.
Iyer’s oxygen levels had fallen to 50% after the injury, according to the source, and he was unable to stand up for almost ten minutes.
”There was a complete blackout around him and it took him some time to come back to normal.”
”I’m currently in the recovery process and getting better every passing day. I’m deeply grateful to see all the kind wishes and support I’ve received – it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts,” Iyer had said on Instagram.
Following India’s two-Test series against South Africa, a three-match ODI series will take place at Ranchi on November 30, Raipur on December 3, and Visakhapatnam on December 6. On December 9, the two teams will begin a five-match Twenty20 International series.
