Sanju Samson has broken the record for most sixes by an Indian batter in a single edition of a T20 World Cup. Despite spending most of the time on the bench during the course of the tournament, the opener from Kerala has now scored two consecutive match-winning knocks in the tournament.
During India’s virtual quarterfinal game against West Indies on March 1, Sanju scored a 50-ball 97 and followed it up with a 42-ball 89 in the semifinal against England in Mumbai on Thursday. His blazing knock powered India to 253-run total on a batting-friendly track.
Sanju smoked Jofra Archer for four sixes in the match to become only the second batter to achieve the feat against England’s star pacer in T20Is. In the semifinal, Sanju cleared the ropes on seven occasions. With his seventh six in the match, Sanju reached the tally of 16 sixes in the T20 World Cup 2026 from just four innings, the highest-ever by an Indian batter in a single edition of the tournament.
He broke Rohit Sharma’s record of 15 sixes, which the former India captain had hit in the 2024 edition of the T20 World Cup.
Samson, also became the fourth Indian opener to record at least 200 runs in the T20 World Cup. Meanwhile, the ICC has revealed the shortlisted names for the Player of the Tournament award in the tournament, where Sanju is the only Indian player to make the cut.
However, the most sixes chart in the T20 World Cup 2026 is led by New Zealand’s Finn Allen with 20 sixes, followed by Shimron Hetmyer of West Indies with 19 sixes and in the third position is Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan with 18 hits over the fence. Sanju is placed fourth with 16 sixes off four matches.
