In the most recent ICC ODI rankings for batters, which were revealed on Wednesday, Indian maestro Rohit Sharma rose to the number two position amid speculation over his future in international cricket.
Even as Babar Azam dropped to No. 3 following a run of poor scores in the recently finished ODI series against the West Indies in the Caribbean, the 38-year-old Rohit, who hasn’t played competitive cricket since the 2025 IPL season, overtook the Pakistani and moved up a spot.
Rohit is only behind Shubman Gill (784), the Test captain of India, who has maintained his top spot in the rankings with 756 rating points. With 736 points, former skipper Virat Kohli was in fourth place.
Prior to the Indian team’s trip of England, both Rohit and Kohli announced their retirement from the Test format; nevertheless, they have declared their desire to continue playing in the 50-over format.
The two standout batters have begun training to regain their form and might be seen playing in the three-match ODI series against Australia in October.
Along with his longstanding India teammate Kohli, Rohit is considered one of the greatest ODI players of all time. He achieved his career-highest ranking points in the 2019 World Cup, amassing 882 points after hitting a tournament record fifth century.
The last time Rohit and Kohli played in an ODI was during India’s successful Champions Trophy campaign earlier this year in the United Arab Emirates.
With KL Rahul in 15th place and Shreyas Iyer in eighth, India presently has five players in the top 15 of the men’s ODI batting rankings.
