Rohit Sharma staying put, say Mumbai Indians amid Kolkata Knight Riders rumours

Before the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), the Mumbai Indians (MI) have decisively put an end to the circulating rumors that their former captain Rohit Sharma would be moved to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Following KKR’s recent appointment of Abhishek Nayar as their new head coach in place of Chandrakant Pandit, rumors began to circulate on social media. Since Nayar taught and supervised Rohit on his return to international cricket earlier this year, the two have a close bond. Fans speculated that a reunion in KKR colors would be imminent due to their closeness.

But MI’s social media team swiftly put an end to the rumors with a witty post on X. The franchise wrote, “Sun will rise tomorrow again ye toh confirm hai, but at (K)night…mushkil hi nahi, namumkin hai!” — hinting that a move to the Knight Riders was “not just difficult, but impossible.”

Since he joined the team in 2011, Rohit Sharma has been the Mumbai Indians’ face. MI became one of the most successful teams in IPL history under his leadership, winning five titles and creating a winning culture based on composed leadership and reliability.

A significant change occurred in the 2023 season when Hardik Pandya took over as captain after returning from the Gujarat Titans. Meanwhile, Rohit has persisted in his role as the team’s senior batter and mentor. He has periodically been substituted in and out of games since the Impact Player rule was implemented; this action apparently fueled rumors of internal conflict, though nothing substantial has ever come to light.

After leading India to a historic T20 World Cup triumph in Barbados, where they defeated South Africa in an exciting final, Rohit recently announced his retirement from Twenty20 international cricket. He also retired from Test cricket earlier this year after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, remaining active in only One-Day Internationals.

Even though India lost the three-match series, Rohit displayed his signature flair in India’s most recent ODI series against Australia, scoring a graceful century in the last game and a fluid fifty in the second.
