Rohit Sharma scripts history, surpasses Virat Kohli’s long-standing IPL record

Playing in his first T20 match since the last IPL, Rohit Sharma looked in great touch as he scored a brilliant 38-ball 78 during Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2026 match against Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday.

The 38-year-old stitched a 148-run opening stand with Ryan Rickelton as MI chased down KKR’s target of 221 runs with five balls to spare. Rohit struck six sixes and equal number of boundaries in his innings.

During his innings, the former India captain achieved a special milestone by going past Virat Kohli’s long-standing IPL record. He now holds the record for scoring the most runs against a single team in IPL history.

Rohit, who also played for the now-defunct Deccan Chargers, has scored 1,161 runs in 36 matches against Kolkata Knight Riders across his IPL career. In doing so, he went past Kohli’s previous record of 1,159 runs against Punjab Kings.

He reached another major milestone as he became only the fourth player in IPL history to register 50 or more fifty-plus scores. He now joins an elite list that includes Kohli, David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan.

Rohit has also enjoyed huge success as a leader in the tournament. He has won six IPL titles in total, one with the Deccan Chargers and five as captain of Mumbai Indians, making him one of the most successful captains in IPL history.

He joined Mumbai Indians in 2011 and took over as captain in 2013. In his very first season as skipper, he led the team to their maiden IPL title. Rohit then continued to lead the side for more than a decade before Hardik Pandya replaced him as captain ahead of the 2024 season.

Moreover, he is Mumbai Indians’ highest run-scorer and is among the few batters to have crossed the 6000-run mark in the IPL. His best season with the bat came in 2013, when he scored 538 runs and played a big role in Mumbai Indians winning the title that year.
