Rain pushes decider to final day as India cling to slim hope after Root-Brook onslaught

After a down and out India managed to stay in the game once more after superb hundreds from Joe Root and Harry Brook that nearly secured the contest for England, rain in the evening session forced the series-deciding final Test to day five.

After England needed just 57 runs to finish the chase at tea, a determined India managed to come back with their unwavering spirit, as has been the case throughout the English summer.

Brook (111 off 98) and Root (105) were dominating the match, but Mohammed Siraj and company persisted after the interval.

Root was caught behind off Prasidh Krishna after the lanky Indian bouncer had found the stumps of a struggling Jacob Bethell, leaving the home team at 337 for six. Brook was dismissed prior to tea.

Shortly after reaching his 39th Test century, 13th against India, and third in the series, Root was dismissed.

The scoreboard barely moved when the old ball, which had been doing nothing during the afternoon session, began to help the pacers.

All of a sudden, the final 37 runs appeared far away.

When bad light stopped play with India’s momentum, Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton were in the middle.

With the new ball only 3.4 overs away, England were 339/6.
