MS Dhoni’s potential move to BCCI: Cricketing mindset sought ahead of T20 World Cup 2026, says report

Former India captain and two-time World Cup winner Mahendra Singh Dhoni has reportedly been offered a big role by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In contrast to a brief stint during the 2021 T20 World Cup, Dhoni has been offered a mentorship job with the BCCI that is more comprehensive, according to a report in CricBlogger.

In a move to further strengthen Indian cricket, the world’s richest cricket board is reportedly keen on involving MS Dhoni in a mentoring role across all teams, including junior and women’s cricket. The BCCI aims to tap into Dhoni’s sharp cricketing acumen to shape the next generation of stars. “Dhoni is again offered to mentor Indian cricket,” a BCCI source revealed in the report.

Even after retiring from the national team in 2020, Dhoni is a respected figure both domestically and internationally. According to the report, the BCCI believes that his role in guiding the young brains will be crucial in forming the future generation of Indian cricketers.

Dhoni, who plays for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has avoided involvement in BCCI affairs since his retirement. In contrast to other cricketers, Dhoni maintains a low profile and is rarely spotted outside of high-profile weddings and events.

The major question remains: will MS Dhoni take up the BCCI’s offer, or is there anyone capable of convincing the 44-year-old legend? According to the report, Dhoni’s involvement may not be easy, especially with Gautam Gambhir currently serving as the Indian head coach. Dhoni’s unique persona and independence could make it challenging to persuade him to join the setup.

The last time MS Dhoni agreed to mentor the Indian team, during the 2021 T20 World Cup, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly was believed to have played a pivotal role in securing his involvement. Interestingly, it was also in the same year that Ganguly’s influence led to Rohit Sharma’s appointment as the Indian captain.

Conflict of Interest is another factor that might cause Dhoni to think. In the upcoming season, Dhoni is anticipated to continue playing for CSK in the IPL. The former cricketer would prefer to prevent any conflicts of interest that would arise if he were to accept the position offered by BCCI.
