Mohammed Shami created history in Lucknow Super Giants season opener against Delhi Capitals at Ekana Stadium on Wednesday. Leading LSG’s pace attack, he claimed a wicket on the first ball of the first over of DC’s innings.
Delhi chasing 142, lost Rahul off the first ball of the innings when the opener with more than 5000 IPL runs was caught by Mohsin Khan in the third man region.
The 35-year-old pacer entered the record books for becoming the first bowler in IPL history to take a wicket on the first ball of an innings five times. Interestingly, Shami achieved the feat in his LSG debut on Wednesday. He had done the same in his debut for Gujarat Titans, taking a wicket off the first ball of an innings. On both occasions, the batter was Rahul.
There are seven other bowlers, who have taken a wicket on the first ball, three times in IPL history. But Shami is the only bowler to have achived the feat five times.

LSG is Shami’s sixth IPL team, having previously played for Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
LSG traded him from SRH ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, despite a quiet last season where he picked up just six wickets in nine matches.
In IPL 2025, Shami struggled for rhythm and was even dropped from the playing XI after leaking runs. He ended the season with a high economy rate of 11.23 and also registered an unwanted record, conceding the most runs in a match by an Indian bowler in IPL history.
