Lionel Messi to lift curtain on massive 21-metre statue during India ‘GOAT’ Tour

Lionel Messi will unveil a 21-meter (70-foot) statue of himself on Saturday in India as part of a three-day visit that has caused a stir among fans.

The iron sculpture in Kolkata, which depicts Messi holding the World Cup aloft, is a part of the “GOAT Tour,” which will visit four Indian cities and may include a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

For security considerations, the 38-year-old Argentina and Inter Miami star will unveil the monument virtually instead of in person.

A life-size replica of Messi sitting on a throne is on display at a “Hola Messi” fan zone in Kolkata. His Miami residence is likewise recreated in the hall, replete with mannequins of his relatives.

During his brief visit to Kolkata, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner will also meet Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly.

Ahead of his arrival, Messi declared it an honor to travel to India and interact with the fans.

“India is a very special country and I have good memories from my time there 14 years ago — the fans were fantastic,” Messi said in a statement.

“India is a passionate football nation and I look forward to meeting a new generation of fans while sharing the love I have for this beautiful game.”

Messi will travel to Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi following his brief friendly match in Kolkata. He will play another friendly and go to a performance in his honor in Hyderabad. According to reports, he will meet PM Modi in the capital.

This week, Messi received the Major League Soccer Most Valuable Player award for the second time in a row after leading the league in goals and leading Inter Miami to the MLS championship.

The former forward for Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain will lead Argentina’s World Cup defence in North America in June and July.
