Kane Williamson retires from T20Is, will continue to play ODIs and Tests

Just four months before the 2026 T20 World Cup, legendary New Zealand player Kane Williamson announced his retirement from the T20I format. Williamson, the Blackcaps’ longtime skipper, declared on November 2 that he was leaving the format and that he would still play Test and ODI cricket.

With 2575 runs from 93 games, Williamson ends his career as New Zealand’s top scorer in the T20I format. After the 2024 T20 World Cup, the longtime all-format skipper reduced his involvement with the team, leaving Mitchell Santner in charge.

Williamson captained the New Zealand team in 75 Twenty20 Internationals out of his 93 appearances. The Kiwis achieved remarkable consistency in the format under his direction, making it to the ICC T20 World Cup final in 2021 and the semi-finals in 2016 and 2022.

Williamson stated that it seemed appropriate to step down from the shortest international cricket format at this time. He claimed that the team, which is preparing for the T20 World Cup 2026, which India will host in February and March, now has clarity thanks to his retirement.

“It’s something that I’ve loved being a part of for a long period of time and I’m so grateful for the memories and experiences,” he said.

“It’s the right time for myself and the team. It gives the team clarity for the series moving forward and ahead of their next major focus which is the T20 World Cup. There’s so much T20 talent there and the next period will be important to get cricket into these guys and get them ready for the World Cup. Mitch is a brilliant captain and leader – he’s really come into his own with this team. It’s now their time to push the Blackcaps forward in this format and I’ll be supporting from afar,” Williamson concluded.

Williamson has placed himself in the process of transition there as well, even though he will still play for the T20 teams worldwide. The batter’s playing career in the Indian Premier League came to an end when he recently joined the Lucknow Super Giants as a strategic advisor.
