Kagiso Rabada’s availability against India in limbo; set for more medical assessments

After their pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada was ruled out of the series opener in Kolkata due to a rib injury, South Africa kept their fingers crossed over his availability for the second Test. The team management said that Rabada is “undergoing further assessments”.

Rabada suffered a rib injury during Tuesday’s first training session. A series of medical examinations finally resulted in a last-minute withdrawal at Eden Gardens.

“So KG (Kagiso Rabada) sustained the injury during the first training session on Tuesday, then he underwent a scan on Wednesday morning, and then underwent a fitness test this morning and was experiencing discomfort and then was ultimately ruled out of the game,” the team media manager said.

When asked if Rabada would be back for the second Test in Guwahati on November 22, the manager responded: “He’s still undergoing further assessments with the medical team.”

Until Friday morning, the Proteas had not decided whether to play Rabada or not.

Due to his absence, Corbin Bosch joined seam bowling all-rounder Wiaan Mulder and Marco Jansen in the starting lineup for just his fourth Test.
