Jasprit Bumrah’s fiery fifer floors South Africa as India bowl out Proteas for 159

Thanks to a five-wicket haul from pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, India bowled out South Africa for 159 on the first day of the opening Test in Kolkata on Friday.

Ton de Zorzi, Simon Harmer, Keshav Maharaj, and openers Aiden Makram and Ryan Rickleton were among Bumrah’s (5/27) victims.

Axar Patel (1/21), spinner Kuldeep Yadav (2/36), and pacer Mohammed Siraj (2/47) all shared five wickets. After winning the toss, the visitors’ batting performance was dismal. De Zorzi and Wiaan Mulder were the top scorers.

South Africa’s problems were made worse by Mohammed Siraj’s double strike, which reduced the visitors to 154/8 at tea as India strengthened their hold on the first Test. After giving up 34 runs in his opening six overs, Siraj persevered and eventually broke through the lower middle order with a spectacular double-wicket burst in his tenth over, dismissing Marco Jansen and Kyle Verreynne in four balls.

As he attempted to defend towards mid-off, Verreynne (16), who was dropped twice in the 34th over, was undone when the ball hit his pad and then bat. South Africa burned their last referral after being reviewed for the third time in the innings.

First up, Jansen (0) was hit by a short ball, but Siraj produced a length delivery that started to reverse before pitching around off, darting back quickly, and passing through his gate.

Even though Shubman Gill lost another toss, India looked set to bat on the first day itself when Axar Patel opened his account at the stroke of tea by trapping Corbin Bosch (3) leg before wicket. Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah had started the session by picking up where they had left off.

The left-arm spinner kept the batters under constant examination by posing challenging questions with drift, dip, and length variations.

Wiaan Mulder and Tony de Zorzi attempted to stabilize the innings with cautious batting following the early defeats of Temba Bavuma and the openers.

Mulder put in almost fifty balls of effort and appeared compact against India’s four-pronged spin attack, but fifteen minutes into the second session, he lost focus. He tried to break loose against Kuldeep with a reverse sweep, but he utterly missed it and was caught leg before wicket.

After lunch, India struck again in the third over when Bumrah came back to remove the in-form de Zorzi (24) after a probing first spell of 7-4-9-2.

Earlier in the morning session, India dominated the first session, reducing South Africa to 105 for 3 in 27 overs at lunch. Jasprit Bumrah demonstrated his skill with two unplayable deliveries to dismiss both openers, while Kuldeep Yadav added the valuable wicket of captain Temba Bavuma.

South Africa dominated the first half, reaching 57 for no loss in 10 overs by choosing to bat with an extra all-rounder in Wiaan Mulder. However, Bumrah (2/9 in 7 overs) turned the morning around by taking two wickets in five deliveries in consecutive overs.

After 23 dot balls, Aiden Markram started up with a straight drive and a fluid cover drive. He then punished Axar Patel twice and unfurled a brilliant late cut past backward point.

As the run-rate soared past five per over, he also hit Axar for a wristy six over mid-wicket. India was further frustrated by Ryan Rickelton’s inconsistent 22 off 23 (4×4).

Bumrah produced a peach from around the wicket just as India seemed to be leaking runs after Shubman Gill lost another toss. The more than 30,000 spectators at Eden Gardens roared when a ball with a speed of 140 kmph straightened late and beat a hesitant Rickelton to uproot his off stump.

He was even better in his next over. Markram (31 off 48; 5×4, 1×6) had to glove to Dhruv Jurel after a short-of-length delivery reared abruptly on a surface already displaying the odd ball linger low. The pitch’s erratic character was highlighted by the difference in bounce.

Prior to India’s introduction of Kuldeep Yadav, Bumrah again caused difficulty for Bavuma with a thigh-pad strike in the same over. In his second over, the left-arm wrist-spinner struck, with Jurel taking a fine inside-edge opportunity and Bavuma succumbing to a cunning leg-slip trap.

Before lunch, India utilized all four spinners. Washington Sundar bowled the last over as the surface continued to behave erratically, with odd balls flying and staying low. Mulder (22 off 43) and Tony de Zorzi (15 off 38), who were both playing their debut Tests in India, were at the crease at the break.

Earlier, India made a daring selection decision under Gautam Gambhir’s think tank, fielding four spinners for the first time since the Nagpur Test against England in 2012. Axar Patel was called up in place of designated No. 3 Sai Sudharsan, who was observed training independently with physiotherapist Adrian Le Roux in the morning.

Due to Kagiso Rabada’s rib injury, Marco Jansen and Mumbai Indians pacer Corbin Bosch formed South Africa’s two-man pace attack, while Senuran Muthusamy, Player of the Series in their 1-1 draw with Pakistan, was left out.

India ended the opening day at 37/1. At stumps, KL Rahul (13) and Washington Sundar (6) were at the crease, steadying the innings after the early dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal (12).
