India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah may miss the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, as per recent reports. The development follows the BCCI’s decision to release him from the squad during the ongoing England tour, with Bumrah skipping the final Test as a precautionary measure to avoid injury.
Recently, Bumrah has been overworked. In just three Test matches during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series in England, he bowled nearly 120 overs and claimed 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls. However, he appeared worn out and conceded more than 100 runs in a single innings during the third Test, which had never happened in his career.
Before the England tour, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and top selector Ajit Agarkar had stated that Bumrah would not play all five Test matches in order to maintain his fitness and manage his workload.
Bumrah is now probably going to miss the Asia Cup 2025 because the Asia Cup begins on September 9 and he has a Test series against the West Indies a few days later. Choosing whether to play him in the T20 event or save him for more crucial Test matches where World Test Championship points are at stake has put the selectors in a difficult position.
A BCCI source told PTI: “It will be a tricky call but Bumrah loves Test cricket and there are World Test Championship points at stake. As far as T20 is concerned, he can play the series against New Zealand in January, which will be a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup.”
In the lead-up to the 2026 T20 World Cup, the official also suggested that Bumrah might concentrate on Test cricket and avoid limited-overs games, such as the majority of ODIs. In order to prepare for the World Cup, he might make a comeback for T20I games, like the January series against New Zealand.
His availability for the upcoming November Test series against South Africa may also be impacted by this workload strategy. The final decision will currently be made by selectors Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar based on Bumrah’s long-term performance planning and level of fitness.
India’s Asia Cup campaign begins on September 10 against the United Arab Emirates, and on September 14 they play a high-stakes match against Pakistan. India is predicted to do well in the tournament because of their form. But with Test matches approaching, it appears more and more unlikely that Bumrah would play in the Asia Cup.
