IPL 2026: Opening jinx haunts Mumbai Indians as Kolkata Knight Riders await in marquee clash

In their tournament opener in Mumbai on Sunday, a strong Mumbai Indians will play a depleted Kolkata Knight Riders in an attempt to snap a five-year title drought in the Indian Premier League.

The Mumbai Indians, the IPL’s joint most successful team, haven’t held the trophy they won five times between 2013 and 2020 in a long time.

The Hardik Pandya-led team finished third last year after falling to the runners-up Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2, but the Mumbai Indians will believe they have all they need to try to win a record-extending sixth championship this year.

On Sunday, MI will try to break the curse of losing their first game since 2013.

The Mumbai Indians are once again a formidable team in the competition thanks to their all-around talent, and a revitalized Rohit Sharma will be eager to get back among the runs. Jasprit Bumrah, Pandya, Tilak Varma, and captain Suryakumar Yadav make up a large portion of India’s T20 World Cup-winning team.

Ryan Rickelton, Sherfane Rutherford, Corbin Bosch, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner, Will Jacks, AM Ghazanfar, and even Trent Boult, who is anticipated to partner with Bumrah, are among MI’s wealth of foreign talent.

MI has two seasoned Indian operators in Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar, and Naman Dhir might play the finishing role once more, which he did quite well last year.

The Mumbai Indians are known for being poor starters in the IPL, thus the key will not only be to identify the ideal playing combination and use the Impact Player rule to their advantage, but also to win a few games early on to gain momentum.

Even before the first ball is played, the Kolkata Knight Riders, who are visiting Mumbai with youthful Angkrish Raghuvanshi and captain Ajinkya Rahane, have some important questions to address.

The KKR leadership group’s main challenge would be to focus on a bowling attack that appears to be very different from what they had anticipated following the auction.

Two of KKR’s Indian bowlers, Akash Deep and Harshit Rana, are out of the competition due to injury, and the team released Mustafizur Rahman on the BCCI’s orders.

Many will undoubtedly rely on Varun Chakravarthy in that bowling lineup, even though Blessing Muzarabani, a man who has gained a lot of recognition in white-ball cricket, may find himself in the thick of things from the start.

Additionally, KKR has two former CSK players: Matheesha Pathirana and Rachin Ravindra, who should improve their batting. They have two excellent all-rounders in Cameron Green and Sunil Narine, but Tim Seifert appears to be their only starting option for wicketkeeper-batter.

With 24 victories in 35 games, the Mumbai Indians have dominated the Kolkata Knight Riders over the years. No team has defeated KKR more. With 20 victories, even the Chennai Super Kings are far behind.

For good reason, Wankhede Stadium is referred to as a batter’s paradise. Scores are high, the boundaries are short, and the pitch is flat.

Dew in the second inning plays a significant impact in this. It makes bowlers’ lives more difficult, particularly when it becomes difficult to grasp the ball. Teams that win the toss typically choose to bowl first because of this.

It’s not all one-sided because both pacers and spinners have had their chances in previous games. While spinners can still have an effect if they mix things up effectively, fast bowlers must be precise.

There won’t be any rain, but there will be a lot of humidity. Players may become fatigued as a result, therefore controlling their energy on the field will be crucial.
