When the Kolkata Knight Riders play the Mohammed Shami-inspired Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2026 opener in Kolkata on Thursday, they may make drastic adjustments in an attempt to win their first game of the season.
Shami just finished an incredible performance of 2/9 in four overs against Sunrisers Hyderabad, dismissing Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma in back-to-back overs. These two players had just pounded KKR.
Shami, who represents Bengal in domestic cricket, is a master at straight seam bowling and movement. He will enjoy the atmosphere at Eden Gardens and might become a major threat for the KKR, who haven’t won any of the three games.
On a green Eden surface, Aussie pacer Xavier Bartlett of the Punjab Kings demonstrated the effectiveness of straight seam bowling on Monday, blowing away KKR’s top order by dismissing overseas duo Finn Allen and Cameron Green in three balls.
After their match against Punjab Kings was called off, KKR, reeling on 25/2 in 3.4 overs, were lucky to escape with a point.
Rainfall has been consistent over the last three days due to a trough that stretches from Gangetic West Bengal to the Gulf of Mannar, and it is expected to continue until late Wednesday or early Thursday. The game is unlikely to be significantly impacted by rain because of the 7.30 p.m. start.
Dealing with Prince Yadav and mystery spinner Digvesh Rathi, as well as the rest of LSG’s attack, could be crucial, even though Shami will pose a serious threat in the powerplay. LSG’s bowling in the powerplay is their strength, as they had reduced both Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals to 26/4 in their clashes.
Given KKR’s shaky batting, the early stages of the match would be intriguing. With varying degrees of success, KKR has continued to use the Ajinkya Rahane-Finn Allen opening combination. However, they may try to bring things back into balance by pairing Allen with Tim Seifert, who was left out in a baffling decision. Another middle order option is Rachin Ravindra.
The poor returns of India spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who is yet to take a wicket, and Sunil Narine, who has taken one wicket for 69 runs in eight overs, have been KKR’s main concerns.
The squad may also consider their discovery of Daksh Kamra, an up-and-coming “mystery” spinner, as both were indisposed in the most recent match versus PBKS and may return.
Due to Cricket Australia’s workload management regulations, their most expensive overseas acquisition, Rs 25.20-crore recruit Cameron Green, who has managed scores of 18, 2, and 4, has struggled with the bat and hasn’t bowled yet. Rovman Powell was brought in during the postponed game, despite KKR’s continuous support for him.
LSG, on the other hand, will be encouraged by their recent victory, particularly when Rishabh Pant, batting at number three, demonstrated maturity and game knowledge to anchor the pursuit with an undefeated 68. The LSG’s matchup with the faltering KKR bowlers will be crucial because they had veteran Aiden Markram and Australia captain Mitchell Marsh in the top three.
