IPL 2026: KKR rope in Tim Southee as bowling coach, after naming Shane Watson as assistant coach

New Zealand cricketer Tim Southee was named the Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) bowling coach for the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season on Friday.

Southee took 776 wickets while playing for his nation in 107 Test matches, 161 ODIs, and 126 T20 Internationals. During his playing career, Southee played for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

“KKR has always felt like home to me, and it’s an honour to return in this new role. The franchise has an incredible culture, passionate fans, and a great group of players. I look forward to working closely with the bowlers and helping the team achieve success in IPL 2026,” said the New Zealander.

Venky Mysore, CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders, said, “We are delighted to welcome Tim Southee back to the KKR family, this time in a coaching capacity. Tim’s vast experience and technical expertise will be instrumental in shaping our bowling unit. His leadership qualities and calm approach make him an ideal mentor for our young bowlers.”

On Thursday it was reported that Shane Watson has been named the Kolkata Knight Riders’ assistant coach. After three years away, the former Australian all-rounder, who was previously linked to a similar position with the Delhi Capitals under Ricky Ponting, is back in the IPL as a coach.

The Queenslander, who has played in 59 Tests, 190 ODIs, and 58 T20Is for Australia, will collaborate with Abhishek Nayar, the three-time former champions’ new head coach.

“With Watson joining the coaching staff, KKR aim to further strengthen their strategic core as they prepare for IPL 2026, building on their legacy as one of the most dynamic and successful franchises in the league,” KKR said in a release.

“We are thrilled to welcome Shane Watson to the KKR family. His experience as a player and coach at the highest level will add immense value to our team culture and preparation. His understanding of the T20 format is world-class, and we look forward to his contributions both on and off the field,” KKR CEO Venky Mysore said.

Watson expressed his excitement, saying: “It’s a great honour to be part of a franchise as iconic as Kolkata Knight Riders. I’ve always admired the passion of KKR fans and the team’s commitment to excellence. I’m eager to work closely with the coaching group and players to help bring another title to Kolkata.”
