The deterioration in all-rounder Cameron Green’s batting form has alarmed former Australian captain Greg Chappell, who claimed that Green feels “stuck in the crease, cannot move, cannot use his reach and athleticism to score runs”.
Chappell’s remarks came ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), in which the young Australian, who signed a contract for Rs 25.20 crores, will play for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as one of their star players.
However, Chappell voiced concerns over Green’s form despite his recent century in the Sheffield Shield against New South Wales. According to SEN Cricket, Chappell thinks Green’s concentration on bowling has affected his batting.
“Bowling has impacted his batting. He can still be one of the great all-rounders of the game because he has the talent, but (it depends on) whether he has got the decision making, the mental skills to go with it, whether he’s getting the best advice on where he is going,” Chappell said.
“I saw a very athletic young batsman with a beautiful setup and able to move in any direction, and now I see a batsman who is stuck at the crease, who cannot move, cannot use his athleticism, cannot use his reach to score runs,” he added.
Green did not live up to the expectations at the T20 World Cup. The 26-year-old all-rounder struggled greatly, scoring 24 runs in three innings, two single-digit scores, and just one wicket.
With 93 runs in three innings at an average of 31.00, a strike rate of over 124, and a best score of 36, Green was Australia’s top run scorer in the series against Pakistan before the T20 World Cup, which ended in 0-3 series defeat.
With 1736 runs at an average of 32.75 in 37 Tests and 59 innings, including two hundreds and seven fifties, his Test batting stats likewise appear mediocre. Two years ago, he scored his last century when batting at number four away from home in New Zealand, with a brilliant 174 not out.
Green scored just 171 runs in eight innings at an average of 24.42, with a best score of 45, during the recent Ashes series at home against England. Green has a batting average of 28.96 at home after 20 Tests, with just four fifties in 31 innings, despite his enormous batting potential.
