IPL 2026: Delhi Capitals eye top-order stability against in-form Mumbai Indians

When the Delhi Capitals play the self-assured Mumbai Indians in their first home game of the IPL 2026 season in Delhi on Saturday, the focus will be firmly on their top order.

DC had hoped for more stability this season after switching up as many as seven opening combinations the previous year, but preliminary indications indicate the problem still exists.

The Capitals’ top order collapsed swiftly as they chased a meek 142 against the Lucknow Super Giants in their opening match. KL Rahul was dismissed for a first-ball duck, while Nitish Rana and Pathum Nissanka were out in short succession, leaving the team struggling at 26 for four.

However, 22-year-old impact substitute Sameer Rizvi showed poise and maturity by hitting an unbeaten half-century.

Together with Tristan Stubbs, the duo scripted a six-wicket triumph with an uninterrupted stand to save DC. The fragility at the top is concerning, especially against a Mumbai attack led by the unbeatable Jasprit Bumrah, even though Rizvi’s bold strokeplay stood out.

The Capitals will be looking forward to more stability at the top as they continue to strive for their elusive first IPL crown. They can choose to use either the erratic Prithvi Shaw, who struggles with consistency, or Abishek Porel, who showed flashes of brilliance last season.

On the other hand, even without Australian pacer Mitchell Starc, who is still unavailable, DC’s bowling unit appeared much more confident. Mukesh Kumar was frugal, T Natarajan, who has missed a lot of time owing to injury, contributed with a three-wicket haul against LSG, and South African pacer Lungi Ngidi continues to cleverly employ slower deliveries.

As anticipated, the spin duo of captain Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav put pressure throughout the middle overs, preventing the opposition from running away with the game. In order to tackle MI’s potent batting lineup, which features players like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma, Delhi will need to combine pace changes with spin control.

After ending a 14-year opening-match jinx with a record chase against Kolkata Knight Riders, MI will go into the game full of confidence.

Rohit made a dramatic comeback to T20 cricket by turning back the clock with a scorching 78. Ryan Rickelton, a fellow opener who was selected ahead of the more seasoned Quinton de Kock, gave strong support with a forceful 81 and is probably going to hold onto his spot.

Despite being expensive, MI bowling had its moments. Bumrah and Trent Boult kept things close while Shardul Thakur claimed three vital wickets. Due to a minor groin issue, Mumbai utilized Suryakumar as an impact player. It is unclear if the Indian T20I captain would be able to play a major role in the Feroz Shah Kotla on Saturday.

With 21 wins out of 37 games played, the Mumbai Indians have a better head-to-head record against the Delhi Capitals. MI have defeated DC in their last three meetings, including both of their IPL 2025 encounters.
