India’s 2015 World Cup pacer Mohit Sharma bids adieu to cricket

Mohit Sharma, a seasoned pacer who made 34 appearances for India and spent more than ten years in the Indian Premier League, announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Wednesday.

In an emotional Instagram post, the 37-year-old pacer—who played in 26 ODIs and 8 T20Is—announced the news and thanked the supporters, teammates, and authorities who helped shape his journey from Haryana to the global arena.

Sharma, who featured in four IPL finals without lifting the trophy, posted on Instagram: “Today with a full heart, I announce my retirement from all forms of cricket.”

“From representing Haryana to wearing the India jersey and playing in the IPL, this journey has been nothing short of blessing. A very special thanku to the Haryana Cricket Association for being the backbone of my career. And my deepest gratitude to Anirudh Sir, whose constant guidance and belief in me shaped my path in ways words cannot express.”

Mohit, who debuted for India in 2013, claimed six wickets in eight Twenty20 matches and 35 wickets in 26 ODIs. After playing for India in the 2015 ODI World Cup, he developed into a reliable death-overs option for Chennai Super Kings under MS Dhoni.

“Thanku to the BCCI, my coaches, my teammates, IPL franchises, support staff and all my friends for their love and support. Special thanks to my wife who always handled my mood swings and anger, and supported me through everything. I look forward to serving the game in fresh ways. Thanku so much. Innings over, gratitude forever,” he added.

Mohit played for the Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in addition to CSK. He was the Titans’ second-highest wicket-taker of the 2023 season.
