India Women could earn Men’s T20 World Cup-winning purse if they clinch ODI title: BCCI

The Indian women’s cricket team is poised to make history when they play South Africa in the Women’s ODI World Cup final on Sunday. The BCCI is ready to provide the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team a financial bonanza if they win the trophy in Navi Mumbai.

The top brass is reportedly considering paying the team with the same sum as the Rohit Sharma-led team received after winning the T20 World Cup in the Americas last year, in accordance with the “equal pay” principle promoted by former BCCI secretary and current ICC head Jay Shah.

A staggering Rs 125 crore (Rs 1,250 million) was given to the entire team—players and support personnel—for their achievement in the men’s T20 World Cup, when they triumphed over South Africa in the championship match.

“The BCCI supports equal pay for men and women and hence there are lot of discussions that if our girls win the World Cup, the reward won’t be anything less compared to men’s global triumph. But it isn’t nice to make an announcement before they win the Cup,” a PTI report quoted a BCCI source as saying on conditions of anonymity.

It should be mentioned that the BCCI gave each player Rs 50 lakh (Rs 5 million) after the Indian women’s side lost the 2017 World Cup final to England by 9 runs at Lord’s. Tushar Arothe, the former head coach, and several support personnel also received generous compensation.

Eight years down the line, if Indian women win, the prize money for each cricketer might be ten times higher, if not lower.
