India v England in T20 World Cup: Third semifinal, same trophy script?

India will meet England in the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2026 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday. This would be for the third time both teams would meet in the semifinal stage of the tournament.

Interestingly, in the past two editions of the T20 World Cups, the winner of this contest has gone on to win the tournament.

In the 2022 edition of the T20 World Cup semifinal at Adelaide. India batting first were restricted to 168 for 6. Virat Kohli scored a fifty while Hardik Pandya slammed a fluent 33-ball 63. Alex Hales and Jos Buttler made light work of the target as England chased down the target by regiostering a 10-wicket victory with four overs to spare. England then went on to win the 2022 T20 World Cup by beating Pakistan.

India had its vengeance two years later when they met England in the 2024 T20 World Cup semifinal at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. Batting first, India scored 171, with Rohit Sharma scoring 57 runs while Suryakumar Yadav (47) and Hardik Pandya (23) chipping in with crucial contributions.

England faltered in the run chase and were bundled out 103, handing India a dominant 68-run win. Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav picked three wickets each while Jasprit Bumrah claimed two scalps. India then lifted the title after beating South Africa in a thrilling final.

Will history repeat itself? It would be an interesting India vs England contest to follow and see if the winner of tonight’s contest goes on to clinch the T20 World Cup 2026 title in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
