The International Cricket Council classified the first Ashes Test pitch at Perth Stadium as “very good” on Thursday, even though the match ended in two days.
A pitch with “good carry, limited seam movement, and consistent bounce early in the match” is rated as “very good” under the governing body’s four-tier rating system.
This made “for a balanced contest between batters and bowlers” possible, according to the ICC.
In a thrilling Test that saw 19 wickets fall on day one, Australia won by eight wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Mitchell Starc took 7-58 and skittled England for 172 before Australia crumbled to 121-9 at stumps. On the second day, Travis Head’s outstanding 123 off 83 balls led Australia to victory after England was bowled out for 164.
James Allsopp, the head of cricket at Cricket Australia, stated that the grading supported “our belief Perth Stadium produced a pitch that provided a fair balance between bat and ball”.
“The dominance of some brilliant pace bowling from both sides and the frenetic nature of the contest meant the match lasted only two days,” he added.
“This was disappointing for fans holding tickets for days three and four, but we saw some incredible moments which captivated huge viewing audiences and will inspire even more kids to pick up a bat and ball this summer.”
On December 4, the day-night second Test gets underway in Brisbane. The surface at the Gabba is also known for being quick and bouncy.
