Due to “unforeseen circumstances,” Mumbai was named by the ICC on Friday as one of the five locations for the women’s ODI World Cup next month, replacing Bengaluru. Beginning on September 30, the event will feature up to five games at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium, including three league games, a semifinal, and possibly the championship game. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru was unavailable, therefore a rejig was required.
“While unforeseen circumstances required us to adjust the schedule and replace a venue, we are pleased to now have a line-up of five world-class venues that will showcase the very best of the women’s game.
“The stage is set, and I am confident this tournament will capture imaginations and inspire a new generation of fans,” ICC Chairman Jay Shah said.
The eight-team competition will also take place in Guwahati, Indore, Visakhapatnam, and Colombo.
The Karnataka State Cricket Association’s failure to obtain the required permits to host the matches most likely prompted the move, albeit the ICC did not specify the precise causes.
After an investigation into the stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL triumph celebrations earlier this year, the Chinnaswamy was deemed unfit to host major events.
