Hospitalised Damien Martyn recovering well: Report

According to a report citing his family, former Australian cricketer Damien Martyn, who was recently admitted to a Gold Coast hospital after being diagnosed with meningitis, is on the road to recovery.

After suffering from meningitis, the 54-year-old former right-handed batsman, who participated in 67 Test matches, was said to be in an induced coma.

“Damien is progressing well,” the former cricketer’s family announced in their first statement after he was admitted to the hospital, according to Herald Sun Sport.

“Damien Martyn’s family has expressed its ‘deepest appreciation’ to staff at Gold Coast University Hospital in their first public statement since the cricket great was hospitalised with meningitis,” the report added.

The Darwin-born cricketer replaced Dean Jones in the 1992–1993 home series against the West Indies, marking his Test debut at the age of 21.

One of his 13 Test tons, he achieved his highest total of 165 against New Zealand in 2005.

Before going into commentary, he played his final Test match in the 2006–07 Ashes series at the Adelaide Oval.

Martyn averaged 40.8 while playing in 208 ODIs and was a member of Australia’s winning team in 1999 and 2003. Despite batting with a fractured finger, he scored an undefeated 88 in the 2003 World Cup final against India.

Martyn was also a part of the team that won the Champions Trophy in 2006.
