Historic first? Cricket Australia weighs hosting Big Bash match in India

Cricket Australia (CA) is mulling the idea of hosting a Big Bash League (BBL) match in India next season in an attempt to tap the lucrative market, as reported in the media.

CA’s latest initiative is seen as part of their larger plan to tap into the massive Indian market and push forward BBL’s presence there, especially with the expected sale of at least two of its eight franchises. According to a report by Sen Cricket which claimed that there are ongoing discussions to explore the possibility to host a BBL match in India, most likely in Chennai.

The report also said that CA’s head of business operations Phil Rigby and head of competition development and strategy Margot Harley recently travelled to India to examine the feasibility of hosting an overseas fixture.

An official of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) told Cricbuzz about the CA delegation’s visit to Chennai late last week.

“We have heard their proposal and are fully aware of our jurisdiction. The TNCA has left the matter to the BCCI. We have made it clear to the Australian delegation that without BCCI approval, the plan cannot move forward,” a TNCA official told Cricbuzz.

“The ball is in the BCCI court,” the official added.

The report said Perth Scorchers would be the frontrunners to play in India “given their time zone and an openness from WACA officials to consider offers from wealthy Indian business figures.”

However, the talks are at an early stage with multiple stakeholders, including broadcasters and the BCCI involved, who would need to give their clearance before any deal is finalised.

The BBL is one of the top T20 cricket leagues in the world. Perth Scorchers have been the most successful team, having won the title six times.
