India’s application to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games was accepted by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Ahmedabad was named the “ideal” location due to its “world-class stadiums, cutting-edge training facilities, and a passionate sporting culture.”
Days after the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) approved the motion following the submission of the “Expression of Interest,” the decision was made.
“The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the proposal of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for submission of bid for the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2030,” stated a press release from the Press Information Bureau.
“It also gave its approval to sign the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA) along with the required Guarantees from concerned Ministries, Departments and Authorities and sanction of required grant-in-aid to Gujarat Government, in case the bid gets accepted,” the release added.
The IOA is anticipated to finish the process within the next 48 hours, and the bid deadline for the event is August 31. The CWG was last held in Delhi, India, in 2010.
The host nation will be chosen by the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow during the final week of November. Since Canada withdrew from the competition, citing financial limitations, India’s chances of winning the event have improved.
Ahmedabad would be the perfect host city for the Games, according to the PIB statement following the cabinet meeting.
“Ahmedabad is an ideal host city offering world class stadiums, cutting-edge training facilities, and a passionate sporting culture. Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest stadium in the world, has already demonstrated its capability by successfully hosting the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final,” it said.
