IPL 2026: Tilak Varma’s blazing ton powers Mumbai Indians past Gujarat Titans

The Mumbai Indians ended their four-match losing streak with a 99-run thrashing of Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Monday thanks to Tilak Varma’s spectacular maiden century in the Indian Premier League.

After a dismal start, Tilak reached the milestone with a boundary off the final ball of the innings, taking MI to 199/5. Tilak stayed not out on 101 off 45 balls.

Left-arm seamer Ashwani Kumar produced outstanding figures of 4/24 in four overs as GT was bowled out for 100 in 15.5 overs in response.

The GT batters were unable to contribute anything noteworthy. Kagiso Rabada (3/33 in 4 overs) took three wickets in the powerplay, putting MI in danger when they were asked to bat first.

Tilak did the hard lifting for MI, hitting seven sixes and eight fours to halt a trend of low scores in the league’s early stages. Naman Dhir stepped in and made 45 off 32 balls.

TV cameras saw captain Pandya animatedly addressing Tilak, who had struggled to reach 19 off 22 balls and was periodically jeered by the Motera crowd, something during the deliberate time-out after the 14th over.

However, following that intermission, the Tilak that people have always known emerged, hurling the kitchen sink at GT’s fastest bowlers. Ashok Sharma, the new pace sensation, was dismissed for 26 runs, while Prasidh Krishna was dismissed for 19.

Tilak’s dismal form—he had only managed 43 in his previous five innings—was one of the talking points prior to Monday’s session. He finished the day with eight fours and seven sixes, along with a few overcovers and several hits to the ground.

Tilak was pushed by Pandya (15 off 16 balls), but he didn’t contribute much to their 81-run partnership off just 38 balls. Prasidh Krishna (1/54 in 4 overs), who conceded 41 in his final two overs, was a major contributor to the final six overs’ 96 runs.

This came after Rabada (3/33 in four overs) swept the top order away within Powerplay with a fast clip, guaranteeing that the five-time winners, who had been looking utterly out of sorts, would have another day of below-par totals.

Along with Pat Cummins, Jasprit Bumrah, and Josh Hazlewood, Rabada is regarded as one of the greats of his generation. He took three wickets by attacking the stumps and bowling the “Test match length” faster and fuller.

Danish Malewar (2) realized the difference between domestic and international bowling when Rabada struck him on the pads plumb in front of him because he was unable to bring his bat down in time.

When Rabada offered him width, Quinton de Kock (13 off 11 balls) hit a rasping square cut. However, a short delivery caused him to inflate a pull shot, which the bowler joyfully grabbed.

His dismissal of out-of-form India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav (15 off 10 balls) was undoubtedly the best. Rabada was straight driven for a boundary after Surya clipped him for a six into cow corner.

Rabada returned with a peach of a delivery, pitching up at 152 kmph on the fourth stump line that abruptly cut back. When the bat broke through the defense to peg the stump back, there was no discernible footwork and it was away from the body.

The innings was revived by Naman Dhir, who struck a fifty in the previous game. Despite never controlling the attack, he continued to push the scoreboard by using Ashok Sharma’s pace to score a few boundaries.

Tilak’s most famous knock of his IPL career didn’t happen until after the strategic break. It was the Mumbai Indians’ fastest hundred in the competition’s history.

The Mumbai Indians’ impressive batting performance will give them more self-assurance as they work to move up the IPL rankings. Tilak Varma’s innings might solidify his spot in the team’s batting lineup going forward. The outcome affects both teams’ prospects of making the playoffs and the points table.
