Rahul Dravid quits as Head Coach of Rajasthan Royals

After declining a “broader position” within the team, head coach Rahul Dravid will leave the Rajasthan Royals ahead of the 2026 IPL season, the team announced on Saturday.

Prior to the 2025 Indian Premier League season, Dravid was named the Royals’ head coach.

It’s interesting to note that the Royals’ announcement coincides with speculation that captain Sanju Samson wishes to quit the team as well.

“Rahul has been central to the Royals’ journey for many years. His leadership has influenced a generation of players, instilled strong values within the squad, and left an indelible mark on the culture of the franchise,” Royals posted in a statement on X.

“As part of the franchise structural review, Rahul had been offered a broader position at the franchise but has chosen not to take this. The Rajasthan Royals, its players, millions of fans worldwide extend heartfelt thanks to Rahul for his remarkable service to the franchise,” the statement added.

The Royals will find themselves in a difficult situation a few months prior to the mini auction if Samson also departs from the team.

Following the Indian team’s victory at the T20 World Cup last year, Dravid had returned to the Royals as head coach for the 2025 Indian Premier League.

The legendary batsman had previously played with the Royals for three seasons, from 2011 to 2013, before becoming the team’s mentor till 2015.

With four victories from 14 games, the Royals missed out on the playoffs after finishing ninth in IPL 2025 under Dravid.
