Before heading to Dubai for the Asia Cup, India Test captain and T20 vice-captain Shubman Gill reached the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) for a fitness evaluation and preparations.
In preparation for their tournament opener against the hosts, the United Arab Emirates, on September 9, the Indian team is expected to assemble in Dubai on September 4.
Gill was selected as the North Zone captain, although he had to miss the current Duleep Trophy quarterfinal matchup versus East Zone due to a bout of flu. Prior to his flight to Bengaluru, Gill was recuperating from his illness at his residence in Chandigarh.
Gill might take a plane from Bengaluru to Dubai because, unlike in the past, when the squad would gather in Mumbai before traveling as a group, the players will arrive in Dubai in a staggered manner from their respective locations.
In addition to Gill, wicketkeeper batter Jitesh Sharma has also arrived at the CoE to get ready for the tournament.
Washington Sundar, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mohammad Siraj, Shardul Thakur, and lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah are also scheduled to arrive at CoE for the mandatory pre-season assessment.
Although Jaiswal and Sundar, who are on the Asia Cup standby list, will also play in the Duleep Trophy semi-finals, Thakur is expected to lead West Zone.
Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana (North Zone), and Kuldeep Yadav (Central Zone) are among the other players headed to the Asia Cup who are currently competing in the Duleep Trophy quarterfinals.
