IPL 2026: Nitish Rana fined for umpire altercation after Tristan Stubbs’ dismissal against Chennai Super Kings

After a heated confrontation with the fourth umpire during Saturday’s Indian Premier League encounter against Chennai Super Kings in Chennai, Delhi Capitals batsman Nitish Rana was fined 25% of his match fees.

Tristan Stubbs’ request to replace his wet gloves was denied by the umpire in the 19th over, sparking a furious argument.

Because of the high humidity in Chennai, Stubbs requested a change of his wet gloves. An irate Rana argued with the fourth umpire after the South African batsman was dismissed off the very next ball when the umpire turned down his plea. Rana was also given a demerit point.

“Nitish Rana, batter, Delhi Capitals has been fined 25% of his match fee and has also accumulated 1 demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct for Players,” read a statement from the IPL.

“Rana was found to have breached Article 2.3 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which relates to ‘use of an audible obscenity during a match’,” the statement added.

Rana admitted to the offence and agreed to the penalty imposed by the match referee.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, the captain of the Chennai Super Kings, was fined Rs 12 lakh for his team’s slow over-rate against the Delhi Capitals.

After winning by 23 runs, CSK made their IPL 2026 debut.

“As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Gaikwad was fined INR 12 lakh,” read an IPL media advisory.
