The rising batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has found a fan in former Pakistan pacer Tanveer Ahmed, who believes once the batter makes it to the Indian team, he will overshadow players like Abhishek Sharma.
Tanveer has sparked a debate by saying that Sooryavanshi’s attacking and fearless strokeplay would take the spotlight when batting with the established stars of Team India.
“When Sooryavanshi plays for India, people will forget Abhishek Sharma. And when both are batting together, Abhishek won’t come even close to Sooryavanshi,” Tanveer was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
He also added that fans would be so captivated by Sooryavanshi that “people won’t even notice Abhishek.”
Immediately, Tanveer contradicted to what he said earlier. “Over a period of 10 years or so, I can’t say if Sooryavanshi will be as devastating. I am talking about right now.”
Playing for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, Sooryavanshi has become one of the biggest young stars of the season. At just 15 years old, the opener has impressed everyone with his fearless batting and currently tops the Orange Cap race with 200 runs in just four matches. His aggressive style has stood out, especially his explosive 78 off 26 balls against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. What makes his performances even more special is the confidence with which he has taken on top bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Josh Hazlewood.
On the other hand, Abhishek Sharma continues to prove why he is one of India’s most dependable T20 batters. The Sunrisers Hyderabad opener had a mixed T20 World Cup 2026 but still played some important knocks, including half-centuries against Zimbabwe and New Zealand. Coming into IPL 2026 with high expectations, he recently returned to form with a 74 against Punjab Kings. So far, he has scored 182 runs this season.
While Tanveer’s comments have sparked a lot of discussion, it might be too early to compare the two. Abhishek is currently the top-ranked T20I batter in the ICC rankings and has performed consistently at the highest level. Sooryavanshi, meanwhile, looks like a special talent, but it remains to be seen if he can maintain this form over a longer period.
