When the struggling Kolkata Knight Riders play Punjab Kings in their IPL match in Kolkata on Monday, they may have an additional test from the rain gods. The IMD weather bulletin states that there is a significant chance that rain will affect the game and cause it to be shortened.
The weather might make KKR’s early-season concerns worse as they play the Lucknow Super Giants next, a game that also has a rain predicted. Interestingly, weather also affected KKR’s home match against PBKS on April 26 of last season, forcing both teams to settle for a point apiece.
There is a limited window for even a shorter match due to the cut-off timings and the possibility of rain playing spoilsport. Only if play starts by 10.56 pm, the absolute deadline to guarantee a result, can a minimum five-overs-a-side contest take place. The toss would have to happen by 10.46 p.m. in that case.
If it comes down to it, a five-over shootout becomes a high-intensity match with limited opportunity for consolidation, emphasizing power hitting. However, the game will be abandoned and each team will receive one point if no play is feasible before the deadline.
Last season, KKR’s rain-plagued campaign included a washout in Bengaluru, which damaged their prospects of making the playoffs as they finished eighth out of ten teams.
A struggling and increasingly rudderless KKR will need to make a significant comeback to bounce back from their bad start. The three-time champions may attribute their early difficulties to the absence of front-line pacers Mustafizur Rahman, Harshit Rana, Akash Deep, and Matheesha Pathirana, but the real problem is a poor team plan that has left them facing a third straight loss.
In retrospect, the decision to let go of Shreyas Iyer, who helped them win the 2024 championship, has only seemed worse. Iyer later proved his worth by leading Punjab Kings to a second-place finish in 2025. This made him the first captain to lead three different teams to the finals: Delhi Capitals (2020), KKR (champions 2024), and PBKS (2025).
KKR, on the other hand, had a disappointing season and finished eighth for the first time since 2009.
Despite being out of favor in the T20 scheme of things, Ajinkya Rahane was brought in as captain and, by becoming their top run scorer, somewhat silenced naysayers. However, the team’s decision to replace Chandrakant Pandit as head coach with Abhishek Nayar has drawn criticism. Nayar was the coach of UP Warriorz, who finished last in the WPL this year.
KKR’s team combination is where the confused strategy is most noticeable. Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Rachin Ravindra are three of the best players from New Zealand, but KKR has not made good use of their resources. Only Allen has been given a look-in, while Ravindra, an experienced spin-bowling all-rounder, and Seifert, the second-highest run scorer in the most recent T20 World Cup, continue to warm the bench.
Rather, doubts have been made about KKR’s continued use of Sunil Narine, a franchise mainstay since 2012, despite his declining performances.
The addition of all-rounder Cameron Green, who has been prohibited from bowling by Cricket Australia, complicates matters further and leaves the team with two foreign players unable to contribute fully. KKR’s selection decisions become more perplexing when Rovman Powell, another accomplished T20 player, is seen on the sidelines.
One wonders who is really in charge at KKR as even their well-known support staff, like Shane Watson, Dwayne Bravo, and Andre Russell, have been unable to offer clarification. Their batting hasn’t performed any better, but their bowling was predicted to be a problem.
The lineup is sparse after No. 5, and Rahane’s decision to push himself to open has produced mixed results. They were bowled out for 161 in just 16 overs while chasing 227 against Sunrisers Hyderabad on a free-flowing Eden in their maiden home game. Ramandeep Singh and Anukul Roy, who make up the lower middle order, lack potency, while Narine has been demoted to No. 8 due to the absence of a clear strategy.
PBKS enter the game having won two of their previous games under the direction of Iyer, who is familiar with the Eden conditions. With 108 runs from two games, young Cooper Connolly has been a revelation at No. 3, and Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya have both had outstanding starts. Iyer has confidently anchored the middle overs.
Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen, and Vijaykumar Vyshak appear to be a balanced bowling trio, and seasoned leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal adds even more bite. Kartik Tyagi and youthful Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s efforts have been one of KKR’s few bright spots, but they might not be sufficient against a well-oiled Punjab unit.
With 35 IPL meetings between the teams, KKR lead with 21 victories, while PBKS have won 13, while one game ended in a draw.
