IPL 2026: RCB look to rebuild, CSK, MI, KKR eye return to glory

The 2026 IPL, which begins on Saturday, is expected to provide exciting moments over the next two months with besieged reigning champions looking to rebound after an extraordinary tragedy, decorated sides chasing lost glory, two veterans fighting for relevance, and a clutch of hopefuls keen to impress.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the title holders, would have preferred to start the 19th edition of the league with a lot more glitz and glamour. They will meet Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in the tournament opener.

However, the lead-up to the game is dominated by the memories of 11 supporters who died in the stampede outside the stadium on June 4 during the team’s triumph celebration, creating a somber atmosphere.

The management of the RCB and the Karnataka State Cricket Association have also made action to preserve the memories of the tragic individuals.

The stadium, which had to go through a few uncertain months before obtaining the required licenses from state government authorities to host the IPL matches, has 11 permanent empty seats, according to the KSCA. On the first game day, RCB players would practice wearing jerseys with the number 11 written on the back.

Cricket on the ground frequently exceeds such feelings and sympathetic symbols, even though these are quite admirable measures.

After losing important players, it is easy to see that both RCB and Sunrisers are lacking in bowling resources.

Aussie pacer Josh Hazlewood has joined the RCB squad but there is no confirmation when he will be declared match-fit. Left-arm seamer Yash Dayal will be absent from RCB. Dayal will miss the full season due to claims of sexual assault. Suyash Sharma, left-arm pacer Mangesh Yadav, spinner Krunal Pandya, and seasoned pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be their mainstays.

Pat Cummins, the captain of SRH, will be absent, at least initially. The stand-in captain is Ishan Kishan. However, there isn’t much faith in their backup plans. On flat tracks, Brydon Carse, Jaydev Unadkat, Harshal Patel, and Harsh Dubey might be severely challenged.

Both teams will be looking to use their batting firepower to cover up their bowling flaws.

Virat Kohli, Tim David, Phil Salt, Jacob Bethell, captain Rajat Patidar, and Romario Shepherd are among RCB’s strongest players. SRH can counter them with Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Kishan, and Heinrich Klaasen.

Together, the Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders have won 13 IPL championships. However, they had a difficult season last year.

Even though MI finished fourth in the playoffs, it was clear that they were operating on reserve gas. This time, they will undoubtedly aim for a season worthy of the title of five-time winners.

In the end, KKR and CSK finished eighth and tenth, respectively. The teams have been rearranged. In addition to Matt Henry and Noor Ahmad, CSK imported Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals. They will undoubtedly hope that “Old Lion” Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has kept everyone guessing about his IPL future, makes one final run.

With the addition of Tim Seifert, Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, and Cameron Green—who has the largest salary package of any foreign player in IPL history—KKR has strengthened their batting.

Ajinkya Rahane, the captain, will be the glue on top, while Rinku Singh, his deputy, will have to fill in for Andre Russell, who served as their finisher from 2014 until his retirement last year. Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine are their two best bowlers, but their pace is still an issue.

While Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Supergiants will be vying for their first championship, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans will be hoping to add another trophy to their collection.

Old champions attempting to compete with younger generations in order to remain relevant have a very seductive quality. After reaching rarely reached heights in their remarkable careers, Kohli and Rohit Sharma most definitely have nothing to prove at this point.

When RCB won their first IPL title last year, Kohli added one piece of missing silverware to his glowing cabinet. Now that he has realized his lifelong desire, could their talisman maintain his level of passion in this edition? In that situation, Kohli will also be competing against himself. After the January home ODI series against New Zealand, he has had plenty of relaxation.

Rohit makes a little different argument; his most recent competitive match was also against the Kiwis. In the IPL, he has never set the field on fire as a batter. The 38-year-old wants to break the record by scoring more than 538 runs in a single edition and leading Mumbai to their sixth championship.

During the recent T20 World Cup, England head coach Brendon McCullum asked him in jest, “Where is the rest of you?” because he looks the part and has lost a few pounds.

A number of uncapped cricket players have also made a beeline this year in an attempt to impress the selectors with a breakaway performance, as has been the case in the past. Among them are DC’s Auqib Nabi, RR’s Kartik Sharma, and CSK’s Prashant Veer.

Can they question the status quo? Or will the well-known names take control once more? An answer will be provided within the next 65 days.
